History[]

Season 8[]

When Connie's application for Rice University's summer study program was rejected, Kahn visited Brown at her office to demand an explanation. At her desk, she explained to him that there were many other highly-qualified applicants. Kahn retorted that Connie had the best grades at her school, but Brown clarified that grades were not the only qualification. To Kahn's surprise, she elaborated that Rice University already had many smart Asian students and thus rejected Connie on the basis of her race. She added that she would have easily accepted Connie's application if she were Black, Hispanic, or even white. Kahn responded that she was engaging in racial discrimination, but Brown nonchalantly replied that it should have been flattering. Wanting to help him, she told him that she could accept Connie if there was something that Kahn forgot to include in her background, particularly wondering if she grew up in poverty. Dismayed, Kahn informed her that Connie did not grow up in struggle, prompting Brown to reply that such a story could have helped her.
