Minh Souphanousinphone (Lao: ມິນ ສຸພານຸສິນພອນ) is the wife of Kahn Souphanousinphone and mother of Connie Souphanousinphone. She is often in charge of taking care of the house, Connie, a rose garden, and a boat.

Appearance[]

Minh is an adult Laotian woman with short black hair and tan skin. She often wears large, spherical purple earrings, a cream-colored, sleeveless turtleneck top, an auburn women's waist belt, an orange skirt, and brown shoes.

History[]

As the daughter of a Laotian general, Minh had been instructed to date a rich, accomplished man, Phoukong Vivarad, that her father had chosen, but spurned him for Kahn, who was rebellious, poor, and had a moped.[2] The two married and moved to Anaheim, California. They later moved to Arlen, after what Minh described as "neighbor problems," where they were often at odds with their "hillbilly" neighbors.  Minh has a more positive outlook on her neighbors than Kahn, although sometimes her husband's attitude can be seen in her. Both parents more or less have equal strictness concerning their daughter's upbringing; Minh pushes Connie very hard to be successful and fulfill his dreams of her attending an Ivy League school and playing violin for the Philharmonic, but Minh has several moments where she is decidedly in Connie's camp and offers her advice and comfort. Appearance wise, Minh is perceived to be very attractive, especially by Joseph Gribble, who became overwhelmed by hormones and tried to make a move on her in haste (an attempt which amused Minh).[3]

While Kahn is at work, Minh takes care of Connie and the house and prefers to do the work herself. This is a frequent source of comedy between her and Kahn's mother, who comes to visit in one episode and insists on going through Minh's house and cleaning everything.  Although Peggy is considered to be her rival, she, Nancy and Peggy occasionally are seen enjoying their time together, having drinks, brunch, or clothing swaps, and get involved in some issues together, such as saving after-school programs.[4] Minh is less friendly to her male neighbors, sometimes calling them names like "hillbilly" or "redneck" behind their backs or to their faces. However, in dire situations, there have been times the men of Rainey Street have come to her aid, and Minh is more acknowledging of that than has been Kahn.

Most of her episode appearances are being at home, and she is quite skilled at housework. She commented that Peggy could not remove stains from fabrics,[5] and in another episode, she showed Joseph Gribble how to wash his face.[3] She has financial support from her father, as he cosigned one of their home loans.[6]

Aside from her duties as a housewife, Minh is a talented markswoman, a skill she learned from General Gum in childhood. This leads her to join Nine Rivers Country Club as a member of the skeet shooting team. The country club is one of the many things Kahn and Minh envy about the rest of the Laotian community in Arlen, as they have been trying to get into the exclusive club for years and are always trying to impress the Wassanasongs into inviting them to be members. Minh is interested in politics and once ran for school board. She is also often involved in making side-money by becoming involved with stocks and supporting Kahn buying a car wash business, being the camera operator and director filming Kahn for his own Get Rich Quick videos. At one point when Kahn was unemployed, Bobby Hill hired Minh to teach him Lao.[1] Minh also enjoys playing Mahjong; she challenges Peggy to a game after losing $13 to her at Boggle.

As seen in the episode "The Accidental Terrorist" in which Hank spends sticker price on all of the cars he has bought, it is discovered that Minh has a secret that Peggy says she can use against her if she tells Hank that he bought his cars for sticker price.

Minh has implied that she prefers the smell of jockstraps to that of roses.

Personality[]

Similar to her husband, Minh is shown to be fairly proud and go-getting but is not as bad as Kahn. She is very loyal and devoted to her family and will often do what she can for them.

Relationships[]

  • Kahn Souphanousinphone: Minh's husband. Minh is a devoted wife to Kahn and usually goes along with most of his antics and flaunting their "superiority" over their neighbors. That said, she also knows when to put Kahn in his place when he starts to get out of hand by his own ego or from following the lead of someone else.
  • Connie Souphanousinphone: Like Kahn, Minh pushes Connie to be a high achiever in order for her to have a successful future. However, she is not as tough on Connie as Kahn and is often the one helping Connie through emotional matters as she is genuinely concerned about her daughter's happiness. Although Minh prefers Connie to date someone better than Bobby, she doesn't deny how happy Connie is when with him but also isn't afraid to point out his flaws to her. When Connie was facing the choice of whether or not she wanted to stay with Bobby, Minh gave her genuine advice that she should love someone who is right for her and not worry what anyone else says or thinks.
  • Laoma Souphanousinphone: Minh's mother-in-law. The two are shown to have a tense relationship and often bicker with one another. Minh often shows displeasure and frustration when Laoma tries to demonstrate how Minh should better run the household. While she does not openly wish anything bad happen to Laoma, Minh has also done things to keep her away and out of the house.
  • Peggy Hill: Peggy was one of the first friends that Minh made when the family moved to Arlen. While she appears to have a good friendship with her, Minh does not hold back on telling Peggy brutal truths that no one else will, such as Peggy being a housewife that does not know how to clean or her cooking not being as good as Peggy claims it to be.
  • Bobby Hill: Similar to Kahn, Minh is not very fond of Bobby as he is seen in her eyes as the example Connie should not follow. Minh sees how Bobby is a low achiever with barely any motivation to achieve higher goals outside of his hope to become a professional comedian. That said, she is not as mean to him as Kahn is but will speak poorly about him to Connie.

Trivia[]

  • Minh's voice actress, Lauren Tom, also voices Minh's daughter Connie.
  • Minh is able to speak two dialects of Lao as indicated when she taught Bobby a different dialect from the dialect that Connie is familiar with.
  • Minh's strict personality constantly fits into the "tiger mom," a popular Asian stereotype of a mother who craves for her kids to stand out and overachieve in school and academic lives and exerts too much pressure on their studies and education, often to the point of stressing the children's social lives and human relationships.
  • According to her husband, her favorite song is "Tush" by classic rock band ZZ Top.[7]
