David "The Flyin' Hawaiian" Kalaiki-Ali'i is a student at Arlen High School who appears in "Peggy Makes the Big Leagues".

Appearance[]

David is a handsome, tall, and muscular young man with short black hair and tanned skin.

Personality[]

While David is a star athlete, he shows far less interest and effort toward his classwork. As such, the majority of his teachers will give him a passing grade in order for him to stay on the team despite clear evidence that he lacks knowledge of basic spelling and grammar. While he enjoyed not having to do his schoolwork, he soon became incredibly angry when he learned that men of the football club and his own mother portrayed him to be learning disabled in order for his poor grades to be overlooked. This appeared to be enough to make him realize to take school more seriously.

History[]

Season 5[]

A talented fullback, he is Arlen High's star football player, but makes no effort to engage in his school work, resulting in abysmal grades. Despite this, the school faculty willingly looks the other way in order to ensure he is not cut from the football team. This succeeds until Peggy is brought in as a substitute teacher at Arlen High, who rather than flunk David believes she can rehabilitate him by tutoring him personally, which fails spectacularly.

Unwilling to compromise her personal integrity, Peggy flunks David, which both results in his removal from the team and turns the Hill family into pariahs by the entire town. Hank and Buck Strickland suggest David take a short-term internship at Strickland Propane in an effort to help his grade point average and eligibility to play football. David once again shows no interest, causing Hank to compromise his own personal integrity by giving him a passing grade, returning him to the football team. Coming home just as his mother Mrs. Kalaiki-Ali'i finished tricking Peggy and Hank into thinking that he was learning disabled, David angrily asks where his various room items are. He learns the truth about the town giving him a free pass, and is so outraged at the Booster Club's scheme that he comes to Peggy asking to be taught properly in the event his football career does not pan out. Although Peggy claims that she cannot teach him geometry in such a short time, she brings him to Strickland Propane, where she helps him learn about propane basics from Hank before he leaves to play at his next match.

Trivia[]

  • David was voiced by The Mummy franchise star Brendan Fraser.
  • While his age is not directly mentioned, Peggy states he is the same age as Luanne, implying he may have been held back multiple times.
  • There is a continuity error between the way David and his mother spell their surnames. David wears a #33 football jersey with the surname "Kaliiki-Alii" displayed on the back. His mother's last name is displayed as "Kailiki-Aliki" on a nameplate on her desk in "Traffic Jam" (see the gallery below).
  • In "Now Who's the Dummy?", Hank has a photograph of David in his garage when he attempts to build a replacement Chip Block puppet for Bobby.
